What it does not measure

Ra is also an average across sample colours, which means it can conceal weakness in a specific region of the spectrum. Deep red is the usual casualty, because it is not weighted heavily in the standard average. Below Ra 80, colour distortion is obvious to an untrained eye. Why does CRI matter in retail and museums?
Retail
In apparel, cosmetics, and jewellery, the customer is performing a colour-matching task under your lighting whether or not they think of it that way. They are deciding whether a garment is charcoal or navy, whether a foundation shade matches their skin, whether two pieces coordinate. Low-CRI light makes that judgment unreliable, and unreliable judgments produce two outcomes a retailer cares about: a lost sale at the fixture, or a return when the item is seen in daylight and turns out not to be the colour it appeared to be.
Backlit retail casework is a particularly demanding case, because the light passes through or around merchandise that is being examined closely rather than washing a room the customer moves through.

In a museum vitrine, the object’s appearance is the entire purpose of the installation. A pigment rendered inaccurately is a curatorial failure, not an aesthetic preference. Higher is not automatically better in a specification, because higher CRI generally costs efficacy, and efficacy costs power and generates heat. Ra 80+ is the right answer whenever the light is the feature and there is nothing behind it to evaluate.

Because Ra is an average across eight pastel reference samples, a source can post a respectable number while performing poorly on a colour that happens to matter to your project. Saturated colours are not represented in the standard eight, which is why deep red is the well-known blind spot. Where red is the subject — meat counters, produce, cosmetics, timber and leather goods, warm-pigment artwork — request performance on the saturated red sample rather than accepting the average as sufficient.
CRI is measured at a nominal condition
Published figures describe the product operating as intended. Rendering can shift as diodes age, and it shifts fastest in the hottest parts of an installation. A specification that delivers excellent colour at handover and degrades unevenly by year four has usually failed thermally rather than optically.
