SEG (Silicone Edge Graphic) fabric lightboxes are the standard for trade-show booths, retail wall displays, and building signage. The fabric stretches into a snap-frame perimeter, and LED backlighting sits behind it. The fabric diffuses the light, masking the LEDs and delivering a clean, even glow.

Why SEG Fabric Works
The fabric is the diffusion layer. You can run LEDs at higher density without visible hot spots. Colors appear true because the fabric diffusion smooths speckle. Graphics appear crisp and bright even from wide viewing angles.

Frame Depth and Brightness
A shallow edge-lit frame (2–3 inches) works for moderate brightness and small-to-medium displays. For large walls or high-brightness applications, direct-lit systems add depth but deliver uniform illumination across the entire face.

Color Temperature
LUXX offers warm white (3000K), daylight (5000K), and cool white (6500K) fixtures. RGB fixtures allow color-changing displays for seasonal or branded campaigns.

Installation
SEG frames typically include aluminum extrusion with corner connectors. LEDs mount to the back plate. Wiring routes through the frame legs to a single power entry point.

Snap frames (also called click frames or poster frames) hold printed posters and graphics under tension with a spring-loaded perimeter. LED backlighting illuminates the graphic from behind or the edge, depending on frame depth and design.

Retail Menu Boards
Digital or printed menus in restaurants, fast casual, and QSR environments. Backlighting ensures legibility even in dark dining rooms or brightly lit outdoor patios. Color-accurate lighting (5000K–5600K) ensures food colors look appetizing.

Poster Displays
Retail window displays, event announcements, or promotional posters. Edge-lit shallow frames (1.5–2 inches) reduce visual bulk; direct-lit deeper frames allow repositioning without hotspots.

Common Dimensions
11″ × 14″, 18″ × 24″, 24″ × 36″ and custom sizes. Shallow edge-lit frames suit small to medium displays; large posters (36″+) benefit from direct-lit backlighting for uniformity.

Dimming and Control
LUXX fixtures support 0–10V dimming, allowing adjustment for ambient light and time of day. Connected systems can sync menu changes with lighting intensity.

The choice between edge-lit and direct-lit backlighting depends on frame depth, display size, and uniformity requirements.

Edge-Lit Backlighting

How it works:

LEDs mount along the frame edge (top and bottom, or sides). Light travels through a light guide or diffusion panel to the display face. The optical path is shallow — typically 2–4 inches.

Pros:

  • Minimal frame depth — clean, slim appearance
  • Lower cost than direct-lit at smaller sizes
  • Suitable for retail environments with space constraints

Cons:

  • Edge-lit uniformity degrades over distance — larger displays (30″+ width) develop darker zones
  • Requires high-efficiency light guides to avoid dark spots
  • Color temp shift can occur from edge to center on very wide frames

Direct-Lit Backlighting

How it works:

LEDs are distributed across the entire back surface behind the graphic. Light travels a short, direct path to the display face. Frame depth is greater — typically 4–8 inches or more.

Pros:

  • Uniform brightness across the entire display face
  • No edge-to-center color shift
  • Works at any size — 12″ to 100″+ displays
  • Higher overall brightness available

Cons:

  • Greater frame depth adds visual mass
  • Higher cost due to denser LED coverage
  • Requires careful diffusion layer design to avoid visible LED pattern

When to choose edge-lit:

Small to medium displays (under 24″ width), shallow wall-mount frames, budget-conscious retail.

When to choose direct-lit:

Large displays (30″+), high-uniformity requirements, museum quality, large trade-show walls.

LUXX lightbox fixtures support multiple color options:

  1. Fixed color temperature (CCT):
    Warm white (3000K), daylight (5000K), cool white (6500K). Choose once during specification; color remains constant.
  2. Tunable white:
    Shift between warm (3000K) and cool (6500K) to match ambient light or time of day. Restaurant menu boards can warm up for dinner service, cool down for bright midday. Retail displays adjust for seasonal campaigns.
  3. RGB/RGBW:
    Full-color control for dynamic displays, branded color matching, or color-changing retail installations.
  4. Dimming:
    All systems support 0–10V dimming. Pair with daylight sensors to adjust brightness automatically or with time-of-day schedules to match operational hours.

Standard snap frames and SEG lightboxes work for rectangular graphics. For curved surfaces, custom shapes, or installations where snap-frame dimensions don’t fit, LUXX LightWave® flexible LED light sheets adapt to any geometry.
